Today, February 1, is National Freedom Day. A day which commemorates the signing of the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865 by the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln. The idea to celebrate the holiday came from Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave. Wright organized a group of leaders to write a bill for a national holiday that would celebrate freedom for all Americans. In celebration of National Freedom Day, here are 7 of our favorite quotes from Lincoln on freedom.
“As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.”
"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
"In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free - honorable alike in what we give and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth."
"No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent."
"Our defense is in the preservation of the spirit which prizes liberty as a heritage of all men, in all lands, everywhere. Destroy this spirit and you have planted the seeds of despotism around your own doors."
"Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves."
"You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence."

One of our Save the Earth partners, Trees, Water, & People just created this video to celebrate the almost 33,000 trees that they've planted in 2011 with our help. Hope you enjoy!
Who would have thought mints could generate fruit trees?
17,000 attendees including the industry's top buyers, foodservice professionals and journalists
1,300 exhibitors from more than 35 countries around the world
80,000 products featuring the finest foods and beverages
That's a lot of people! And that's a lot of food! (Two of our favorite things!) So, of course we had an absolute blast meeting new friends from around the globe, telling them the Project 7 story, and sampling our 'products for good.'
And when the show closed Tuesday afternoon, we were thrilled to learn that the show donated all the remaining food and beverages to area-anti-hunger programs and initial estimates are they will be able to feed 1,7000 individuals in need. How cool is that?!?
