Plastic – good for more than just recycling

Hold on to your seat. What I'm about to tell you is not only amazing... it's also true! Plastic can be used for good. Don't believe me? Here's how: Vilas Pol of the Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill, has found a way to reuse all plastic. Not just those that are deemed recyclable, but all of them! By simply throwing plastic into a chamber and heating it up to the point of decomposing, Pol is able to produce tiny spheres of pure carbon. So, what's the big deal with these tiny spheres? Well, carbon spheres can be used to conduct heat and electricity and are useful in a long list of things like Tires, batteries and lubricants. In addition, when plastic is heated to this point and the heating chamber is filled with inert gas instead of air, the hydrogen in the plastic is released and can be harvested as hydrogen gas and used as hydrogen fuel. Right now, Pol is only working with a small chamber to conduct his tests, but imagine what the possibilities are. The demand for these plastic spheres matches the huge amount of plastic waste. Good for the planet, good for us. Give us your thoughts? And if you know more about it, let me know.  You can read more about this at Discovery.com

We had a great time ‘Healing the Sick’ in Cleveland!

Many thanks to Caribou Coffee, Hands On NE Ohio, MedWish International, and Ryan Edgar for an incredible weekend! The Caribou Coffee in Westlake, OH was hopping on Friday night!  Caribou Coffee turned their side parking lot into a family fun area and hosted a stellar performance by singer songwriter Ryan Edgar. Caribou Coffee served samples throughout the night and held a 50/50 raffle for MedWish, where we volunteered on Saturday. Kids and adults played the game ‘bags’ or ‘corn hole’ on 8 different game boards. A young woman was face painting for the kids - we saw a lot of Project 7 logos and an impressive Caribou logo. What a night! At MedWish, we had almost 50 volunteers. Caribou provided lunch for the group so everyone was able to mingle and learn about MedWish before we got started. The volunteering was well organized and interesting thanks to Hands On NE Ohio. We were broken down into specific jobs of sorting, packing, logging inventory, etc. It was amazing to see the medical supplies that would have been throw away. We sorted supplies that couldn’t be used in the U.S. due to expiration dates or just weren’t wanted at the hospitals that donated them. Our team went through several pallets of materials and dug up some high demand items (thermometers, stethoscopes, etc). The supplies were perfectly fine and will save many lives in third world countries. MedWish International is always in need of volunteers, especially during the week. Please consider giving your time there. Also, Hands On NE Ohio is a great resource for volunteer opportunities in the Cleveland community. Consider getting plugged in with them as well! More on MedWish International (source: http://www.medwish.org/):  Everyday, countless usable medical supplies are discarded by hospitals, healthcare facilities, and medical supply distributors in the U.S. This occurs while developing countries throughout the world are in desperate need of these items. The primary goal of MedWish International is to recover, recycle, & redistribute medical supplies and equipment as humanitarian aid. In 2009, MedWish diverted 604,540 pounds of medical supplies and equipment from being deposited in landfills. This year they have already diverted 643, 268.5 pounds of medical supplies from the landfills! Check out the MedWish Facebook page as well! Check out our photos on Facebook from the events in Cleveland June 17-19, 2010.

Brad the Intern “Eats the Apple” Pt.1

It was a cold February evening when I strolled through the bright lights and noise that make up the epicenter of fashion, music and culture that is New York City. The richness of diversity is incomparable within the borders of this country, evidenced by the cuisine, fashion and pace of life.  You might be saying at this point, why the heck is Brad the intern reminiscing about “The Big Apple?”  Because…wait for it… Project 7’s headed to NYC this weekend for the Fancy Foods Tradeshow and this is the first post in my series Brad the Intern “Eats the apple”.  A true tale of my epic escapade through all the cuisine New York City has to offer. I can’t accomplish this daunting task by myself.  I need all of you out there who are restaurant rockstars and diner divas to give me your favorite places to eat in NYC and why they are simply fantastic.  Also, you have to tell me what to order at these one of a kind establishments.  I am excited about this adventure and will keep you updated at the destinations I end up choosing, and will reference all the recommendations that come my way. Bonus special with this edition, NYC commercial for Pace Picante, check it out!!!!! Just click on the link below and have a laugh... NEW YORK CITY??????

Are you an Eco-hero or Greendoer?

Millions of people play social games everyday. In fact, you are more than likely one of them. But, what would happen if social games did good? Meet Eco-Heroes. This social media game is pretty much like Foursquare married Planet Green. Finally, there is a way to tell "Who's the greenest of them all?" So here's the story: Why it was created After visiting the 2009 Copenhagen Conference, Eco-Heroes' creator Roz Savage decided that if we got ourselves into this ecological mess, we could get ourselves out. Her assumption was as follows, "We haven't created this mess through a few big disasters. It has been more an accumulation of billions of tiny actions, the kind of actions we all do every day. And that is the way we are going to get ourselves out of the mess - by doing at least one good Green Deed every day, consistently over time. Each and every one of us can make a difference." - Roz Savage And, Eco-Heroes was born. How does playing make a difference in the world? It's simple, log at least one Green Deed every day. For each deed you’ll get points, and as you move up the points scale you’ll be awarded medals. Do more than one Green Deed a day, and win more points! Each week, the top Greendoers will receive a special prize, donated by Eco-Heroes' sponsors SonyEricsson, who are giving away their eco-friendly Green Heart mobile phones, and DaKine, who have donated laptop bags made using their new Re-Gen bag technology! Green Deeds can be a wide range of things. Eco-Heroes calls out the following: pick up trash from your neighborhood while you’re out walking, join an eco organization, write a letter to your newspaper or elected representative, start growing your own veg, start composting, etc. But, be careful, the community can "vote" on your deed - thumbs up means you did a great job, thumbs down means your Green Deed needs to go greener. So, check out the game and start playing. Become a "greendoer" and maybe, if you work really hard, a true Eco-Hero!

Freedom Tweet: Join us on Twitter this Saturday, June 19th!

We love what Luckie Daniels is doing tomorrow to raise awareness of humanitarian organizations on Twitter. Read on to learn how you can participate! - AU Greetings Project 7 Fans! Luckie Daniels here aka "FreedomTweet", inviting all of Project 7's tweeters and bloggers to join us tomorrow, Saturday, June 19th for FreedomTweet 2010. What exactly is FreedomTweet 2010? A grassroots, social change campaign to raise citizen awareness and support for Twitter.com humanitarian organizations and causes! FreedomTweet is not a cause in and of itself — it’s a liberation “messenger” championing GREAT causes and delivering progressive social reform news. FreedomTweet exists solely to raise awareness and rally support for the causes out there fighting for us daily. By *tweeting* with the hash tag #FreedomTweet on Juneteenth, the nationally observed day commemorating the end of Slavery in the United States, FT2010 supporters will be able to easily identify organizations working for liberation, equality and the protection of our planet, worldwide. Here's the deal, we owe the earth and her children far more than a complaint. We can point fingers all day long -- it will solve NOTHING! Or, we can choose to mobilize with folks and organizations of like-minds -- using social platforms like Twitter and Facebook -- to change the world. If you believe it's time to take action, please support FreedomTweet 2010 on June 19th. Here's a link to more FreedomTweet info online — http://freedomtweet.net/?p=33. Read-up and join in! As the descendant of Emancipated Slaves who never really experienced “true” freedom, I stand for my Ancestors. But I also stand for Neda. For Aiyana Jones. For the Gulf. For Darfur. For Haiti. For the Gaza Flotilla. For the abused. For the abandoned. For the homeless. For the hungry. For Rwandan Genocide. For Women. For Children. For FREEDOM where ever it’s sought and/or denied. FreedomTweet is simply a peaceful, civil demonstration of  standing together as testimony of our collective strength and clear warning of our intolerance to the violations of humans and earth we’re witnessing today. Join me -- we'll stand together. Luckie
