What is the price of a child?

What do you think the price of a child is? We are hoping you would say priceless. In many areas of the world, priceless is definitely not the answer. Sadly, for the price of a really nice pair of sneakers, you too can own a child... Recently, an ABC News Nightline reporter went undercover to expose the human trafficking trade in Haiti, with the emphasis being on child slavery. The story is heavy and hard to believe, but so important to share with those that you love. The more the world knows about things like this, the more we, as a global community, can do to change it. We challenge you to read this article and share it with five people that you know (or more if you can). Support "Helping Those in Need" through education and awareness, and we really will "Change the Score." So read it! "How to Buy a Child in 10 Hours: One Reporter's Journey Reveals An Epidemic of Child Slavery in Haiti." Powerful, unbelievable and with your help, changeable.

This sort of activity is practically going on in our own backyard. The distance from Miami to Haiti is roughly equal to the distance between Dallas and El Paso. Having been to Haiti and seeing firsthand the conditions in which the Haitians live while serving in the Navy, it is not surprising to see desprate attempts at making money–including selling children into slavery. The island is overwhelmed by orphans and abandoned children. These are children who display both an innocence toward bartering for candy from me and the other U.S. troops I was there with, as well as a displaying a streetwise sense of survival by steeling whatever they can get their hands on to sell for food, clothing and shelter–all basic necessities we take for granted. Child slavery has to stop, and it’s going to take lowering the hammer on the Haitian government and the people who are buying these children. Incredibly sad that this still happening in 2009.
